GT&T/MCYS/GSL 10/10
… final four shifted from GCC
T THE Everest Cricket Club ground will be buzzing with activity today and tomorrow, as action in the inaugural Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T)-sponsored Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS)/Guyana Softball League (GSL) nationwide 10/10 softball competition bowls off with the quarter-final as well as the semifinal and finals respectively. Softball fans are asked to note that the semifinal and final which were scheduled to take place at the world renowned Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, had to be shifted to the Everest Cricket Club ground, due to unforeseen circumstances at the original venue.
However, the treat that will be in store for the spectators is still on despite the change in venue, with lots of Beyond the Boundary activities including Catch the Ball, Bowl Off, Quick Finger Texting, Best Face and Body Painting depicting 10/10, Best Outfit also depicting 10/10 and the Roving Cameraman.
One of the tournament’s favourites, Wolf Warriors XI, who have labelled themselves the best softball team in the country, will be looking to get past upstarts Memorex, who over the past two years, have been creating upsets in softball tournaments organised by the GSL, when they battle from 10:00 h.
Revelling from their preliminary round victory over another pre-tournament favourite Regal XI, Trophy Stall will be highly favoured to make it through to the semifinal which is being played at the same venue tomorrow, when they oppose Leguan Superstars.
Cotton Field will oppose El Dorado Sports Club while a Crabwood Creek team will be covering some distance to oppose Port Mourant All Stars in what can be deemed a clash of the Berbicians.
With an attractive G$1M first prize up for grabs among other lucrative prizes on offer, the quarterfinalists emerged out of a total of 584 teams that entered the inaugural nationwide tournament that is being co-sponsored by Guyana Times, Survival Sheriff Street Shopping Complex, Cell Phone Shack, Impressions Design and Gizmos and Gadgets and commenced five weeks ago.
Certainly, the intense battle the quarterfinalists were involved in throughout the preliminary rounds, speaks volumes for the intensity of the matches and today’s clashes should not be different, as they are all two matches away from the lucrative first prize.
On show for their various teams today are Timur Mohammed, Suruj Raja, Dinesh Joseph (who is known more for his explosive hitting as an Essequibo opener), Tony Amerally, Andy Bathram, Gobin Narine, Rajin Mohammed and Ryan Boodhoo.
Tomorrow’s final at 19:00 h will be preceded by a cultural presentation which includes dancing from various artistes and tassa drumming, along with a female exhibition match involving the GT&T Lightning Speed XI and reigning countrywide champions Number 68.
The first semifinal will bowl off at 12:00 h while the other will commence at 14:00 h, with the exhibition match commencing at 16:00 h.
