Alleged assailant in Essequibo still to appear in court

THE police in my home village Aurora have been very misleading only to make a fool of me as a victim of an assault resulting in actual bodily harm. The perpetrator being a well known businessman is still to be prosecuted for the offence which was committed since February 2. On that day, while relaxing on my motor cycle at Supenaam where my assailant operates a mobile sawmill and a lumber yard, there was an argument between the two of us.

He had accused me of owing him some money which was not so and after calm was restored, he unexpectedly registered three severe cuffs to my right eye which became very painful and swollen while impairing my vision.

A report was immediately made at the police station and I was given a medical form to see a G.M.O at the Suddie Hospital which I did, but in the absence of an eye specialist there being on duty at the time, I had to see one privately.

A statement was taken from me and from enquires made at the station I was advised that the businessman has been charged to appear at the Suddie Court on February 15. After spending the entire day there, this was not to be and from further enquiries the S/O himself gave me the assurance that the charge was filed with the matter now fixed for February 18.

Again another day was wasted with the police just making a fool of me and it is now baffling and questionable as to whether the businessman would ever be prosecuted. What is really responsible for this man, who also smashed my helmet, to enjoy immunity from the law?

Three days after the incident, it could be verified that the culprit was seen drinking at a pub in Supenaam in company of the Divisional Commander, a Corporal from the very station and a speed boat captain from the same location. Justice must not be seen as a one sided affair and the rule of law need to be maintained at all times irrespective of who is involved.

During my stay for the two wasted days at the court, several other persons were complaining of being faced with the same predicament.

In my humble opinion, the police need to see it as an obligation to ensure that no unnecessary inconvenience and hardship is caused at any one time to any member of the public having regard to the fact that “who feels it knows it” especially in these hard times of being faced with impecuniosities.
