`Windies did rubbish’ – skipper Chris Gayle

CAPTAIN of the West Indies team Chris Gayle bluntly said that they did “rubbish” in their lost to Zimbabwe in yesterday’s Digicel One Day International at the Guyana National Stadium. The home team replying to the African’s score of 254-5, came just two runs short of their target and speaking at the post-match press conference, the Jamaican Gayle did not hold his tongue in saying how disenchanted he was with the loss.

“I’ll be very frank and very honest. I’m disappointed and at the same time I’m just going to go through the procedure and analyse everything before and then I guess I can answer your question.

“But I must give credit to Zimbabwe the way they went about their innings and they set the tone, because 255 is a very good total on that pitch, but I’m not taking away the fact that we didn’t get the runs and they stuck to their plan. We came close but not close enough,” said Gayle.

Gayle, who made a well-played 57 along with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (70) and Adrian Barath an even 50 on his debut, were the horses in which the Windies were riding to victory, but after Narsingh Deonarine (17), the other batsmen fell cheaply.

“I’m very disappointed in those two guys (Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Smith) and Ramdim, the way they got out because those guys were actually the key for us to seal the game and the way they went about it was very disappointing and it was sad to see how they got out. It can be a mental thing, but it’s already done, Zimbabwe are now two up on us and  then by time you check it, we could lose the series but it’s a one-off game and we have to be careful so we still have four games to go so we have to look back at this,” Gayle noted.

Regardless of yesterday’s outcome, Gayle is still standing firm to his role as captain of the team, stating that “I will not walk away from captaincy at this point in time because it would be even worse to do that so I’m definitely committed and I’m certainly willing to groom whosoever is the future for West Indies cricket and at the same time keep working hard because, my objective is to see them rise to the occasion and take the responsibility.”

As it relates to support for the team, he said “We still need that support regardless of the results, you know. When you do crap you have to accept you do crap and guys will have to take responsibility out there in the middle. It’s just sad and disappointing at the same time”.
