Alpha, GDF register wins in GFF/FIFA Super League

DEFENDING champions Alpha `The Hammer’ United and Guyana Defence Force (GDF) both registered 1-0 wins when play in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)/FIFA `Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF’ 2010 Super League kicked off on Sunday at the GCC ground, Bourda. Playing at the world famous Bourda venue, City sides, Alpha United and GDF, registered 1-0 victory over West Demerara’s Seawall F.C and Bartica’s Liquid Gold respectively.

For Alpha United, Dwight Peters netted in the 60th minute, while Stellon David scored for the Army in the 75th minute.

According to reports, the score line in the feature match could have been greater in Alpha United’s favour had their strikers and over-lapping midfielders made use of the many goal-scoring opportunities they were presented with.

The wins by the two City teams have earned them three points each and they will be in action against the same opponents once again on Sunday, but at venues outside of Georgetown.

Alpha United will travel to the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground, West Coast Demerara for their away game against Seawall F.C, while GDF will journey to Bartica for their away game with Liquid Gold.

Based on reports, in the feature match on Sunday last, Alpha United’s performance was a dismal one in both sessions of the game, despite enjoying a greater share of ball possession.

What was lacking was their ability to finish.

However, Alpha’s Edison Gomes executed a well placed left-foot shot midway the first session, but Seawall’s custodian reacted with an equally excellent one-handed reflex save to deny Gomes’ name being inked on the referee’s score sheet.

Gomes’ team mates Shawn `Fatso’ Bishop and Elton Brown were both way off target on a few occasions.

Seawall’s occasional counterattacks were never really threatening and on one occasion, the West Demerara team launched an attack down the left wing. A neat cross to their lone striker up front at the time failed to penetrate Alpha’s custodian Ronson Williams.

After a goalless first half, Alpha came out a bit more purposeful for the second period, but they were once again let down by poor finishing.

However, as the half progressed, Peters made amends for an earlier miss by converting with a powerful right foot volley that sent the ball into the roof of Seawall’s goal.

Earlier in the evening, last year’s runners-up GDF and Liquid Gold played to a first half 0-0 stalemate, but 30 minutes into the second session, David netted the lone goal of the match to give the soldiers victory.
