A Guyanese national who apparently did not like his original name is now before the courts for using a dead relative’s birth certificate to obtain a Guyana passport in that person’s name.
A man by the name of Tyrone Anthony Nelson, who Barbadian authorities say is a Guyanese national, apparently did not like his original name and seemed to have wanted a “Bajan” name, a Nation newspaper report in Barbados said.
When Nelson arrived in Barbados last November he also obtained a Barbados National Identification Card and NIS card in the name of one Dwayne Akeem Eaton Sobers.
Testimony by Assistant Superintendent John Maxwell of the Royal Barbados Police Force Fraud Squad in a Bridgetown Magistrate’s Court showed that Nelson had stolen the Barbados documents from the Bajan.
Nelson had been deported from Barbados in October 2008 after serving six months in prison for credit card fraud. He then came back last November with the new false Guyana passport.
Nelson pleaded guilty of making a false statement to the island’s Electoral and Boundaries Commission. He is now on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds. He is expected to return to court for sentencing on Wednesday.
Assistant Superintendent Maxwell was quoted by the Barbadian newspaper, which described Nelson as a “fake Bajan” as observing; “These (having false Barbadian documents) are the issues that affect national security and which we are particularly concerned about”
