Opposition parties having difficulties with military role not surprising

IT comes with absolutely no surprise that the opposition political parties in Guyana have difficulties with the role of the military in internal security. Those of us who are in tuned with the evolution in security management taking place globally can only dismiss the opposition’s criticisms as non-progressive.
It is this archaic mentality of the PNCR and AFC that has characterized them
as being irrelevant in the eyes of most Guyanese. On such important matter of national security the opposition exhibits such glaring ignorance of the reality where all over the world militaries are involved in internal security.
Let us not forget, that the opposition in which Robert Corbin, Raphael Trotman and others are apart of today have suddenly discovered this new position after losing the elections of 1992 and a government during which the role of the military covered everything under the sun then.
This issue takes us beyond their ability to modern thinking and exposes the opposition’s dishonesty and underplay with the security of this nation.
The suspicion that this issue is being used at the opposition’s convenience for cheap political mileage is indeed mind boggling.
Guyana has over the years reformed the security sector by initiating a comprehensive review of policy and operations, in order to develop a roadmap to guide institutional strengthening and legislative adjustments in-keeping with modernisation. There are still many challenges as we see the world’s constant address of internal security with increasing role for the military’s involvement.
