Abusive estranged reputed husband jailed for assault

MAGISTRATE Adela Nagamootoo, on Monday, sentenced Arlington Layne, of Lot 42 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, to three months imprisonment, after he pleaded guilty to charges of assault and disorderly behaviour.
The prisoner was also fined $10,000 with the alternative of 20 more days in jail.
Layne, 34, a plantain chips and nuts vendor, admitted assaulting his reputed wife, Stacy Johnson, at his home, last January 14.

He also, whilst in custody at Central Police Station in New Amsterdam, behaved in a disorderly manner, said Police Assistant Superintendent Fazil Karimbaksh, prosecuting.

The Prosecutor said Layne and the virtual complainant were living together with their only child and the woman was attending a clinic when she received a telephone call from the father, requesting that she go to his house and collect some things.

However, on her arrival at the place she was requested to go, she was greeted with cuffs and kicks about the body, following an argument, the Prosecutor related.

Karimbaksh said Layne was arrested and charged and, in custody, he misbehaved, using a series of expletives from which he did not desist despite being warned.

Layne, begging for mercy in Court, told the magistrate he and Johnson had a misunderstanding but he did not beat her, only gave her a few slaps.

Declaring that the two of them were still together, Layne turned to the woman, seeking forgiveness but she recounted incidents of abuse and threats since they separated last November.

Johnson said the convict told her, if he cannot get her, then no other man can.

Before being led out of the courtroom, Layne asked Johnson: “Ow babe, this is what our love come to? This is what you do to me, girl?”
