Bail refused in armed robbery, illegal gun cases

MAGISTRATE Hazel Octave-Hamilton yesterday refused bail to Jason Burnette (no address given) on four separate charges of robbery under arms and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Particulars of the indictable offences said that;
* on January 18, 2010, being armed with a handgun, Burnette robbed Tonnet Henry of $60,000 gold chain and five gold rings, priced at $180,000, in booty worth a total of $440,000 and a laptop computer valued $180,000, property of Carib Diamond Drilling Company and

* on December 30, 2009, being armed with a knife, he robbed Andrew

Davis of a $26,000 cellular phone and other things all with a value of

$31,860.

Burnette pleaded not guilty to two summary charges, which alleged that, also on January 18, he was in possession of one snap nose .38 revolver and five live matching rounds of ammunition without licences.

Attorney-at-law Mr. Glen Hanoman, who represented Brunette said he is uncomfortable that the case is being dealt with in that Court and requested it be transferred to another.

But the magistrate rejected the application and said she does not have the power to transfer cases.

Earlier, Hanoman had told the magistrate that she, personally, remanded people and the latter advised the lawyer that she can sue him for making such a statement.

Police Inspector Joel Ricknauth, prosecuting, objected to the bail grant and Burnette was remanded to prison until February 15, when the robbery cases will be called again and through April 22 for the firearm and ammunition matters.
