GUYANA’S top world-rated boxer Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore will be making his Asia debut tomorrow, when he takes on Indonesian champion Marangin Marbun for the World Boxing Association (WBA)/Pan Asian Boxing Association (PABA) super-bantamweight title at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
According to Moore’s long serving manager and promoter, Carwyn Holland, Moore versus Marbun will be the headliner of the six-bout card promoted by top rated boxing, a Bangkok and Singapore-based Asian Promotions Company.
The card dubbed ‘A New Beginning’ is the biggest boxing event to held in Singapore and is expected to be a sold-out.
Moore, who currently holds the WBC Continental Americas, WBC CABOFE, WBA NABA, WBA Inter-continental and the Guyana titles, will be looking to add the PABA scrap to his waist. He arrived in Singapore on Wednesday and is already the most-talked-about fighter in Asia.
“I’m looking forward to the fight and to giving the people of Singapore something to remember,” said Moore.
“Marbun is a strong boxer and this will be one of the toughest challenges of my career – but I’m confident that I have the skills, speed and power to beat him inside the distance. On January 16 I expect to have another belt to add to my collection.”
Moore has expressed thanks to Holland who guided him to his current world standing and sponsors GT&T, Banks DIH, Twin’s Manufacturing Chemists and Robert’s Jewellery for their assistance.
He made special mention of G.T&T’s Marketing Executive Wystan Robertson’s unwavering support and calls on other sponsors and the Government to support young and upcoming boxers; for boxing is the most successful sport in Guyana.
Moore said he is hoping Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo remembers his words in 2004, and promised not to let Guyana down.
“I would like my President to know that I will win a world title and he must be at ringside. I want to be world champion so badly for my country, the Caribbean and especially the youths of Agricola.” Moore stated.
Holland is very confident his charge will win the bout handsomely but would not be able to be at ringside due to commitments for his upcoming card ‘New Year Beatings’.
Holland is seeking the full support of the private sector and the government as he is trying to have Moore fight for his world title in Guyana sometime in April or soon after.
