Stabroek News is being mischievous

The Stabroek News is attempting to be mischievous by reporting in an article in its January 11 edition that Mahaicony resident Mr. Jairam Mohabeer had directed a threat to President Bharrat Jagdeo during his visit to the community on Sunday, says a statement issued by the Office of the President.

The article, titled, “Mahaicony man arrested after threat at meeting with President”, erroneously stated that the man, Mr. Jairam Mohabeer, threatened to shoot the President, the statement said.

“During the meeting with the President and farmers of Mahaicony, a resident brought to his attention an issue whereby the community was being denied access to a shallow well on Mr. Mohabeer’s land.

“President Jagdeo suggested he may have to compulsorily acquire the land to ensure the community’s interest was protected if Mr. Mohabeer was not cooperating with the community for which the well was intended.

“After the meeting, Mr. Mohabeer said he was going to kill anyone who goes on his land. The man did not direct his threat to President Bharrat Jagdeo as promoted by Stabroek News,” the statement concluded.
