M&CC taking legal action against defaulters

After amnesty…
THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown will be taking legal action against those persons who failed to make use of the concessions related to payment of rates and taxes.

Deputy Mayor Robert Williams told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that, during the course of this week, the services of lawyers will be engaged to deal with the persons who showed no regard for the facilities extended to them during the period of amnesty.

Between last September and December, he said the municipality garnered $582M from all sources of revenue, including $180M from Guyana Power & Light Inc. (GPL), as part of its property taxes.

Williams said City Hall was able to meet salaries/wages, contractors’ fees and pay GPL nearly $180M.

According to him, City Hall has not yet received the $42M from Government for what was due for the last quarter of 2009.

Williams said the M&CC is still to meet with President Bharrat Jagdeo to discuss financial matters in general.
Meanwhile, he said a new list of tax defaulters is presently being prepared. (Telesha Persaud)
