Husband claims delayed decision caused wife’s childbirth death

EUSIBO Winth strongly believes that, had nurses who attended to his pregnant wife, 35-year-old Tricia, called a doctor when she was experiencing intense pains and fluctuating blood pressure, the woman would have been alive.

He said, if that call was made, a decision would have been taken earlier to transfer the patient to Georgetown Pubic Hospital (GPH), after it was known that the theatre at Linden Hospital Complex was out of operation.

Speaking to the Guyana chronicle yesterday, at his Lot 4 Silver City Hill Foot, Wismar, Linden home, he said he took his wife to the

Linden institution last Sunday around 19:30 h and left her, later, suffering pain.

It is his belief that Dr Farouk Ryasat was summoned to the hospital too late.

Winth said his understanding was that Ryasat was not on call but responded about 23:50 h after being contacted at 23:00 h.

Winth said his wife was taken into the delivery room but the nurses realised her blood pressure was high and took her back into the female ward, where she was given tablets. But he had to go a shop and purchase water for her to drink because there was none at the hospital.

He claimed the nurses had his wife’s medical chart showing her condition and should have been aware that the situation warranted the urgent attention of a doctor.

Winth said he left the hospital for home, reluctantly, around 20:00 h but was told around 02:00 h that it had been decided to have his wife transferred to GPH.

He said, 20 minutes later, he received another telephone message, informing him that his wife had died.

Winth said he is puzzled by the fact that the theatre at the new hospital was not operational and upset that his wife had not been seen by a doctor when the situation was beyond the capability of the nurses.

This newspaper understands that an investigation into the woman’s death is being initiated by the regional authorities. (Joe Chapman)
