Two policemen were yesterday charged with robbery with aggravation committed on businessman Ramesh Kalicharran.
Police reported that Police Constable Colin Jonas, who is stationed in Berbice, and Marvin Samaroo, 39, of Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice, were yesterday charged with robbery with aggravation committed on businessman Ramesh Kalicharran of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, on December 23, 2009.
The duo appeared before Magistrate Omeana Hamilton at the Springlands Magistrate Court where they were each placed on $300,000 bail, to return to court on January 21, 2010.
On Christmas Eve, three men, including a policeman, were arrested following an armed robbery at Grant, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.
Police said at about 20:00 hours, two men entered the shop operated by the Kalicharrans at Grant 1805, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, under the pretext of making a purchase.
Ramesh Kalicharran, 53, was in the shop when the two men entered, and as Kalicharran was in the process of handing them the drinks, the men held on to his hands and the other handcuffed him.
The men then demanded cash and jewellery and the victim handed over his personal jewellery, valued at $100,000, along with $400,000 in cash, after which they escaped.
The police responded quickly to a report and acting on information received, stopped a motor car with two men, one of whom is a police constable stationed in Berbice, at a roadblock on the Number 76 Village Public Road, Corentyne.
They were arrested and taken to the Springlands Police Station, along with the motor vehicle, where the police constable was identified by the victim as being one of the men who had robbed him.
Further enquiries led to a third suspect being arrested.
