AS I observed the glee and excitement on the young faces of the boatload of children who were on their way to meet Santa at the Arrow Point Resort in the photograph on Page 3 of the Thursday Edition of the Chronicle (24.12.2009), I could not help thinking that should there have been a mishap on the river involving the boat, Christmas may not have been the same for many of the passengers or their families since I did not observe any Life Jackets in use, and the boat appeared to be filled to capacity.
In fact it was quite disturbing to see a few adults sitting on the “rail” of the boat, unwittingly saying to the youngsters on board that there is nothing wrong with their action. Perhaps in 2010 the organisers of this activity can pay more attention to the safety of these children since, in a heart beat, a joyous occasion could turn into one with disastrous results.
