THE cream of the country’s race walkers in all categories: Male and Female, Seniors, Juniors, Veterans and Differently-able will match steps with their Caribbean counterparts when the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) stages it’s Last Lap International Race Walk next Sunday.
The race commences at 06:30 h at the Supply Primary School, East Bank Demerara and proceeds along the East Bank Demerara Highway ending at the Soesdyke Methodist Church. Trophies, medals and other incentives will be up for grabs.
National Race Walk Champion, Rudolph Mitchell who earlier this year chalked up his 100th consecutive win will be going out to continue his winning streak but he will be challenged by a number of newcomers as well as established local and overseas race walkers.
Coordinator of the CSTC, Olga Harry, has said the sport is growing in popularity both as a leisure pursuit and on the competitive stage but as with any venture more support and sponsorship will be needed.
She called on main stakeholders, the government and members of the business community as well sports enthusiasts to come out and support the International Walk Race event with sponsorship in the form of cash, trophies and medals. Assistance in the form of water and transportation is also invited.
The items could be sent to the Club’s Headquarters, Olga Harry’s residence, 222 Back Road Soesdyke while the monetary donations can be sent to Citizens Bank Account No. 218331151.
The CSTC recently concluded another of their successful efforts, as their Junior 10km race in observance of World AIDS Day was held on November, 29 and saw Ivelaw Charles take the top spot for the male competitors. His female counterpart was Angela Charles.
