THE Ministry of Tourism, in keeping with its theme for Tourism Awareness Month “Promoting Quality and Sustainable Tourism in Guyana”, on Tuesday concluded its sensitisation workshop with personnel from the various departments of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
This workshop which sought to educate and promote positive attitudes and services among the staff at the airport was expedited in eight sessions. Employees were well informed as to the manner in which they should greet, assist and treat visitors in the promotion of quality tourism.
Tameca Sukhdeo-Singh, Member of the Board of Directors of Guyana Tourism Authority and Head of Tourism Studies Division of the University of Guyana facilitated the interactive workshop. She emphasised that the employees of the airport are the first and last contact visitors would have and as such their attitudes are pertinent to travellers’ perception of Guyana.
Case studies were utilised during the presentation to exemplify the realities of some challenges that are encountered by customers and service providers during interactions. Recommendations were expressed for resolving some of the problem areas. However, Sukhdeo-Singh expressed that the customers should be the priority and their needs and wants should be satisfied.
She is optimistic that more workshops of this nature will continue since ongoing training sessions are necessary due to changing situations.
