Brazil and Guyana have been developing a very close relationship over the years. With the commissioning of the Takutu Bridge on September 14, connecting Lethem in Guyana to the northern state of Roraima in Brazil, and the revelation that an 800MW hydro-power project in the Middle Mazaruni area, Region Seven is being considered that will feed into the power grid of Roraima, Ambassador Seixas de Andrade’s tenure would be one that will see greater integration between the two neighbouring countries.

Cuba and Guyana have also had a close relationship, especially in the area of health care, which recently led to the opening of the state-of-the-art national Ophthalmology Hospital at Port Mourant in Berbice.

Cuba has provided thousands of Guyanese with free eye care through the “Mission Miracle” programme and training for young Guyanese pursuing medicine as well as several other disciplines.

Also, with Cuban assistance, Government has constructed four modern diagnostic and treatment centres at Suddie in Essequibo, Leonora on West Coast Demerara, Diamond on East Bank Demerara and Mahaicony.

These facilities serve numerous Guyanese every day and has assisted in decentralizing the health care system in the country, reducing the need for Guyanese to travel to Georgetown to seek medical assistance.

Ambassador Marrero, during his tenure, would be ensuring that this strong relationship continues to prosper and grow.

He has served in Cuba’s Foreign Service since 1982 and his assignments have included Mexico, Uruguay and the Latin American and Caribbean Office of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (GINA)
