GKC students produce clinical performances at grading exercise

THE Guyana Karate College (GKC) best karatekas reeled out performances of their lives in front of Chief Instructor Eighth Dan Master Frank Woon-A-Tai at the college’s temporary headquarters on Monday.

While there were some uncharacteristic features of disorganisation that sought to discredit the usually high standards of the college’s beginners, the coloured belts, with utmost dedication, were almost flawless

However, Ronald Fanfair exemplified the GKC’s powerful beginners’ programme when he made two jumps from 9th kyu white to 7th kyu orange belt.

As usual, the students were tested in the techniques of Kata, the imaginary form of defending one’s self against multiple attacks and Kumite-sparring techniques against real opponents. The eight students that were selected for St Lucia were all promoted to higher kyus for brown belt.

Ashley and Krystal Lopes, Aaliyah, Tishana and Kenny Wong and Joshua Mortley reached 1st kyu whilst the ever-improving Tanya Teixeira moved from 4th kyu to 3rd kyu and Eric Hing moved from 3rd kyu to second ahead of their engagement on August 12.

Second Dan black belt Ryan Ramalho reached 3rd Dan with a clinical and almost perfect performance. His two other counterparts Samuel Ming and Terrence Nicholas, with equal grace and power were promoted to 3rd and 2nd Dan black belt.

In addition, Sensei Jeffrey Wong received his Fifth Dan Certificate from the International Shotokan Federation (ISKF) from Woon-A-Tai. Wong will also perform in the capacity of manager/coach when Guyana competes in the Caribbean Karate College (CKC) Karate Tournament in St Lucia from August 12.

Guyana’s contingent of ten that also includes Sensei Neville Mortley as assistant coach will continue their final-phase preparation today at the College in the upper flat of the Malteenoes Sports Club pavilion.
