`The end is nigh and your only salvation is I and I’

THE `America’s got talent’ TV show that’s broadcast here is one of my favourites and it’s a pity that local TV stations have not yet come up with a local version.

I like watching it because it’s usually a blend of really good emerging and potential talent and outrageous comedy.

Judging from those who are picked to get on the show, it’s clear that the producers look for those who can go on to become stars by singing, dancing or getting into some other form of entertainment.

It’s also clear that they are always on the lookout for those they know will provide sheer laughter by their comedic pretensions at believing that they also have talent.

Take a look around this country and you’re sure to find Guyana’s got abundant talent too in both categories.

We’ve got world-class cricketers, a lot of our women are stunning, some of our singers have made it on the international stage, we’ve produced world class boxers and we’ve got some of the best bluffers in the world.

Our bluffers are so good that they can hold their own against any of those picked by the producers for the US TV show to provide comic relief during the search for the really good talented performers.

One such candidate who comes readily to mind is a man in City Hall who’s no mean and green performer and who will be able to hold his own among any world-class bluffer.

If you don’t believe me, just give him 90 seconds on TV to say why the city is still riddled with problems after a term of some 15 years and watch the performance.

His self-professed innocence and attempt to absolve himself of any blame will be marvellous and can earn him an Oscar in Hollywood or land him in Las Vegas for a long run of short performances.

Talk about Guyanese talent for Bull S…! Take a bow, sir!

And he’s got wonderful company in those self-proclaimed messiahs who go about the place preaching doom and gloom in the land while pretending they’ve got all the answers.

From their recent antics, it may not be long before they take to the streets with placards proclaiming: `The end is nigh and your only salvation is I and I’.

If you believe them, it will not be long before there will be multitudes following the Moses among them leading the way with a rod to part the Atlantic and clear a way to the promised land.

Some seem to be so out of touch with reality that while most right-thinking people see Guyana moving along the right road and strengthening its democracy through regular free and fair elections, they see conditions similar to Honduras where the elected President was recently removed in a coup.

The country is earning kudos for its leadership role in the fight against global climate change and the thrust towards a low carbon development strategy to secure a better future for all its citizens, and the doomsday preachers try to find converts for causes only they best discern.

The good thing is that the majority of us can take comfort from tidings of better days ahead and finding mock relief from the world-class bluffers among us.

Maybe one of those groups promoting the plethora of shows these days can organize a bluffing contest at the National Stadium in Providence.

Any bets on who may be among the top performers?
