The Coordinator, Ms. Nerissa Williams told the Guyana Chronicle the entire village will be cleaned up and decorated for a home coming celebration.
She said Devonshire Castle is a very historic place and the focus will be on its history.
The first ever uprising on a sugar estate took place at Cabbage Dam, Devonshire Castle, in 1872 when five workers were killed by colonial Police while protesting with hundreds of other indentured East Indians for better wages and living conditions.
The village also had a Magistrate’s Court and sugar factory and the St. Laurence Anglican School and Church buildings are still standing after 100 years.
Devonshire Castle has produced several headmasters, teachers, doctors, nurses, Police officers, soldiers, mechanics, carpenters, fishermen, farmers, electricians and other technicians and the week long events will feature sports, games, storytelling and concerts.
