Held for disorderly behaviour, resisting arrest
Freed treason accused Mark Benschop, Norris Witter of the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU), and General Secretary of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) Lincoln Lewis, were yesterday arrested for disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest during an illegal protest outside the office of the Commissioner of Police, Eve Leary.
The trio was yesterday hauled off to the Brickdam Police Station where they were processed and placed in the lock-ups.
Their lawyer, Khemraj Ramjattan showed up after their detention, pleaded on their behalf and said that bail was expected at 3pm yesterday.
However, up to press time, the men were still in police custody.
The three men were holding a three-man protest outside Henry Greene’s office during the Police Awards ceremony.
There, one of the three men ended up in a trench and was eventually pulled out and taken away to the police station.
At Brickdam Police Station, Lewis and Benschop were overheard singing the hymn “What a friend we have in Jesus” and the “Lord is my Shepherd” while in the enquiries office.
It was after lunch, when the trio was placed in the lock-ups and waved to the media operatives who had gathered there as they read out their charges.
The men had held similar protests outside the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday and at the opening of the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting and outside the Ministry of Education, voicing several issues in which they said they are interested.
Motorists must have their licences today
Deadline was yesterday
MOTORISTS are warned that from today, members of the Police Force will be monitoring them to ensure that they are in possession of the new road service licences.
The Guyana Revenue Authority announced yesterday that no further extension will be granted for motorists to acquire the document, and anyone who fails to comply with the stipulated deadline, which was yesterday, will be penalised under the law.
The Authority pointed out that enough time had been granted for the acquisition of the document, with two extensions being granted by the Commissioner-General, Khurshid Sattaur.
The GRA also advised that motor vehicle owners who purchase their licences after the deadline will be required to pay an additional 10 per cent on the cost of the licence.
Persons are also reminded that to obtain the licences, they are required to produce their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), registration, insurance and fitness certificate, as well as the previous year’s licences in cases of renewal.
Motorists purchasing their licences in Essequibo, Berbice and Linden, where the manual system is still in use, are required to provide a photocopy of their registration to be kept by the certifying office, as well as their TIN number to be verified by the GRA’s regional office.
The cost of the motor vehicle licences is based on the weight of the vehicle and the cost has remained the same as last year, the GRA said.
