Probation report ordered in domestic violence case

After knife threats…
ACTING Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday ordered a probation report into the background of John Benjamin in a domestic violence case.

Until then, the defendant, 46, was remanded to prison, after pleading guilty to threatening his reputed wife, Camille Faria, at their Lot 45 Hadfield Street, Stabroek, Georgetown home.

Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram, prosecuting, said the prisoner – for the past three years, has been in the habit of issuing threats to and abusing the woman.

The Prosecutor said, on July 9, Faria was cooking while Benjamin was consuming high wine and he requested that she go to bed with him.

When she refused, Benjamin became annoyed and, brandishing two kitchen knives, he threatened to take her life, the Prosecutor narrated.

Benjamin told the Court he and Faria had a misunderstanding which resulted in an argument but he was unaware she was taking it so seriously.

Faria said she and her children are afraid of Benjamin because he always pulls a knife on her when under the influence of alcohol.

But when he is not imbibing liquor, she has no problems with him, the virtual complainant said.

The case will be called again on July 24.
