GFA Cellink Plus double-header tomorrow hangs in limbo

… players and officials to face disciplinary committee today
THE Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA)/Cellink Plus Premier League double-header set for tomorrow evening at the Tucville ground is in limbo, as some players and officials of one of the teams scheduled to play are to face the disciplinary committee today.

Pele are down to face BK International Western Tigers in tomorrow’s feature match, but according to reports, Pele’s head coach Denzil Thompson and his assistant Justin Bentick along with a few players from the club are to face the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee sometime today to answer to charges levelled against them by the Guyana Football Referees Council (GFRC).

It is alleged that on May 15 at the Tucville ground, those persons named by the GFRC behaved atrociously towards the referee Steve James and his assistants Dion Innis and Simon Campbell during the club’s (Pele) Premier League match against Fruta Conquerors which the latter won by a 1-0 margin.

It has been reported that during the match Thompson and Bentick were abusive to James and his assistants and they were subsequently evicted from the technical area of the ground.

According to the GFRC’s letter to GFA’s president Troy Mendonca, it is alleged that Thompson was abusive to James for disallowing a goal he (Thompson) thought should have been allowed and for James not blowing a foul in Fruta Conquerors’ 18-yard box.

This caused James to evict Thompson and subsequently Bentick for the same reason from the technical area.

The GRFC also alleges that after the match was over, some members of the Pele club threatened the match officials.

On Sunday last, Pele were down to face Sunburst Camptown in another Premier League fixture, but because the same persons that were alleged to have been abusive to members of the GFRC just over a week before were part of the Pele line up, the referees refused to officiate the match.

This means that some compromise has to be reached today in order for tomorrow’s double header to come off. If not, the GFA will have to adjust the Premier League fixtures.

Meanwhile, Alpha United continue to lead the Premier League points table with 12 points from four matches, all of which they won.

Guyana Defence Force also have 12 points but occupy second place since Alpha United in their four matches have registered 20 goals and have not conceded any, while GDF have 11 goals to their name and none against.
