Doobay cremated at Reliance

Guyanese murdered in Trinidad
Loud wails pierced the mid-morning silence in Reliance Village, East Canje, Berbice, yesterday, as the hearse carrying the body of slain construction worker Tameshwar Doobay, came to a halt at his parents’ home.

His mother Asha, overwhelmed with grief, questioned why her baby had to return to Guyana in a coffin. Condolences expressed by relatives and friends, instead of consoling her, seemed to tear the woman’s heart further apart.

‘Oh God, will I ever forget this … I don’t think I can … Oh God, my baby… my last child … he went for a better life … but now, look how he coming home’, she wailed.’

Doobay, called Vinod, along with Narad Sukhoo, 29, of East Canefield, also in Canje, were two Saturdays ago kidnapped, murdered and dumped in the Felicity River, Trinidad, after being forcefully taken from their work site.

A post mortem conducted on the bodies on last Monday revealed that they both died from gunshot wounds to the head, according to Guyana’s Honorary Consul in Trinidad, Mr. Ernie Ross.

Sukhoo, has since been cremated in the twin island republic, while Doobay was cremated yesterday at the Reliance Crematorium in Berbice.

Eulogising Doobay, his teenaged relative, Ashanna, said the third child of Asha and Devo was born on March 18, 1988 at the New Amsterdam Hospital. He spent his earlier years at Pletanker Village, East Bank Berbice, and was forced to leave school at the Primary level due to economical constraints.

A lover of sports, primarily cricket and football, Doobay also had a passion for cartoons and would spend hours in front of the family’s television set.

During his teenaged years, he was employed as a labourer at R. Sookraj General Store, in New Amsterdam, and thereafter at Guyana Sugar Corporation before migrating to Trinidad two years ago.

Whilst in the Caricom state, he shared a common law relationship with Shabana, and together they had a son, Brandon.

According to the relative, Vinod, as he is fondly called, was a good provider and a dedicated son, who spent almost three hours speaking to his mother via telephone last Mother’s Day.
