Guyanese Troy Ross is Canada’s New Contender Champion

CANADA-based Guyanese resident and boxer, Troy Ross, was `crowned’ Canada’s New Contender cruiserweight Champion in February, after registering a technical knock-out victory over Ehinomen `Hino’ Ehikhamenor of the US.

According to the Box Rec website, the 33-year-old south paw Guyanese, whose record now stands at 21 wins with 15 knockouts and one loss, forced referee Steve Smoger to stop his fight against Hino at two minutes in the fourth round of their scheduled 10-round contest for the New Contender cruiserweight title of Canada and the British Empire Commonwealth.

In her report on the fight, Box Rec’s reporter Barbara Pinnela said Ross stuck it on `Hino’ with both hands and referee Smoger jumped in and waved off the fight.

Pinnela said prior to this victory, Ross knocked out two other opponents during the Contender tournament and proved that those were no fluke with his win against Hino.

She said his first fight against Lawrence Tauasa ended with a right hook and the second was against Felix Cora Jr, who received a hard and well placed left.

She went on to report that `Hino’ who had previously gone through Darnell Wilson, Deon Elam and Rico Hoye to earn his place in the final, did not go into the fight against Ross unprepared. Knowing that Ross is a southpaw, he (Hino) sparred exclusively with southpaws since returning from Singapore.

According to Pinnella, prior to the premature ending of the fight, `Hino’ held his own and tried to answer back when Ross pressed him, but the latter was unrelenting in his attack.

She said while Ross effectively uses his jabs, he was 0-11 with it in the second round and this was the round that turned from a boxing match into a brawl, as both men became sluggers.

She reported that Ross was able to wear down his opponent and it was mentioned during the fight that both men looked a bit awkward, but Ross proved that he was the better boxer on the night.

She reported that after the fight Ross said, “The Contender’s a great show and it brought life back to boxing.”
