Logie hints at Bermuda exit

HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) – Gus Logie has hinted that he might quit as Bermuda’s coach, following their abysmal performance at the ICC World Cup qualifiers in South Africa recently.

A former West Indies Test player and coach, Logie told the Bermuda Sun: “Maybe we can get a fresh approach from somebody else and a fresh approach from the players.”

His contract expires in September but Bermuda Cricket Board president Reggie Pearman has already stated publicly he wants the Trinidadian to stay on to lead the country’s cricket programme.

Logie, who has had his critics at home, was hugely disappointed with the lack of hunger and desire shown by his senior players in the qualifiers which saw Bermuda fail to qualify for the 2011 Cricket World Cup and also lose their One-Day International status.

He was adamant that morale-boosting victories over Oman and Uganda after his squad had already been eliminated should not paper over the deep-rooted cracks in the local game, the Sun reported.

Bermuda finished ninth in the tournament after losing their opening matches to United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan, and then suffering heavy defeats to Kenya and the Netherlands.

Pearman did not blame Logie for the team’s performance, contending that the national side lacked pride.

“The performances in a lot of cases have not been what we had expected and we have fallen down on those performances,” the island’s cricket chief said.

“It all boils down to a sense of pride, and I don’t think it has hit everybody. I think we have lost that national pride and it’s not only in cricket.”
