MINISTER of Human Services and Social Security, Ms. Priya Manickchand has advised persons in abusive relationships to get out and make use of the support by her ministry.
Alluding to growing concerns over the number of women being killed or seriously harmed by former or current partners, she said, even with avenues for assistance through the 1996 Domestic Violence Act, victims must move away from such circumstances and speak out.
In an invited comment Wednesday, Manickchand said no victim is without the emotional or physical ability to abandon such ties and assured of her ministry’s help.
She said, among the Ministry offers is accommodation for the abused and their children, which is being manned by the Help and Shelter; legal aid to assist in the pursuit of justice and to ensure that abusers meet their financial responsibilities to their children and spouses and financial assistance.
Ms. Manickchand encouraged women, particularly, to utilise the opportunities available to them to resist violence.
