GRA assures boxes for filing returns are secure

I refer to a letter by Mr. Krishna Nand Prasad, which appeared in the Chronicle newspapers dated April 6, 2009 captioned “Where is the GRA office responsible for income tax returns located”. The Guyana Revenue Authority wishes to thank Mr. Prasad for his letter concerning this matter.

Therefore, for the benefit of Mr. Prasad and other valued taxpayers, particularly self-employed persons, the GRA is reminding the general public that the Registration Unit has moved from the Guyana Post Office Corporation Building on Robb Street, Georgetown, and is now relocated at the GRA office at 210 ‘E’ Albert and Charlotte Streets, Georgetown. The registration for the Taxpayer’s Identification Number (TIN) and the lodgement of returns are also being done at this location. The functions of issuing compliance and work permits remain at the GRA Office, Guyana Post Office Corporation Building, Robb Street, Georgetown.

The Guyana Revenue Authority published a notice for approximately three weeks which commenced from January 15, 2009 informing the general public of the relocation of the Registration Unit and where lodgement of returns would be done.

The public was further informed by way of press statements, and other GRA programmes about the restructuring of the GRA and its shift from a tax type to a functional organisation.

In addition, the GRA has stepped up its activities to get persons to file their tax returns with the establishment of tax sites in Georgetown. Currently, arrangements are in place for lodgement of all returns that are due on or before April 30, 2009 to be done at all GRA locations in Georgetown including the Guyana Post Office Corporation Building (old Registration area), Robb Street, and Customs and Trade Administration Building, Main Street. Officers are placed at these locations to receive tax returns.

Tax payers who do not wish to wait for a lodgement notice can deposit their tax returns in boxes provided at all GRA locations in Georgetown.

With regard to the boxes used by the general public in filing all returns on income, GRA would like to assure the general public that these boxes are highly secured, locked at all times and protected by security guards if placed outside the building.
