TWO convicted thieves were each fined $25,000 with the alternative of 12 months imprisonment yesterday, by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle. One of the convicts, Paul Chan, 27, of Lot 359 Craig, East Bank Demerara, pleaded guilty to stealing a pair of ladies shoes, valued $6,500, property of Exclusive Styles, April 8. Chan, employed as a security guard at the city clothing store, confessed that he stole the merchandise because he was experiencing financial difficulties. Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram, prosecuting, said Chan hid the booty at a stall opposite the business place but was seen committing the crime. The other thief, Basil Stoll, 21, of Lot 61 Croal Street, Stabroek, Georgetown, admitted that, on April 13, he stole a jersey, priced at $7,500, belonging Ron Morrison. The same Prosecutor said the virtual complainant became suspicious of Stoll and a security guard found the garment in his pants pocket. Stoll told the Court he took it for the brand name.
