A headline on the front page of the Easter Monday’s edition of the Kaieteur News has quoted Khemraj Ramjattan, Chairman of the opposition Alliance For Change (AFC) party as saying that the pre-condition set by President Bharrat Jagdeo for an investigation into CLICO Guyana is that a similar investigation should be held into the Globe Trust and Investment Company affair. According to Ramjattan, the condition was outlined to some opposition members in a private meeting with the President therefore persons outside of that meeting would be unable to know what was actually said and in what context. What is mind-boggling is the fact that this is upsetting to the AFC. The investors in the Globe Trust were all relatively poor persons whose average investment was about $100,000. These were not persons with means to retain legal counsel to seek redress! The might of the wealthy overcame them and when the Government tried to act, the legal system was used to derail the Government’s actions. The CLICO Guyana is a different issue. Government moved in at the first sign of trouble to try to salvage whatever was left of the company whose investors were in a totally different class. I always question the sincerity of the accusations of discrimination levelled by the Opposition against the Government, not only because they use it as a means to gain political mileage but because of the fact that they chose when to cry discrimination. It is a known fact that persons associated with the opposition parties were responsible for the Globe Trust collapse and that all efforts are being made to sweep that issue under the proverbial rug. The condition set by the President is to ensure that justice is served for all persons who may have suffered form scams or any other financial fraud. This position is fair and should be supported by all fair minded Guyanese. The AFC needs to stop playing politics and ensure that they truly represent the interest of their limited constituent.
