Grove resident killed in road accident

A RESIDENT of Grove, East Bank Demerara, was killed on Easter Monday night after he was struck down by a taxi driver who is now in police custody.

The 72-year-old man, whose name police give as Joseph Cockfield, of Second Street, Grove, was at the time pushing a bicycle across the public road when the motor vehicle, HB 5318, struck him down.

Cockfield was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, also on the East Bank, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said statistics indicate that there have been a total of twenty-eight road fatalities for this year, compared to 21 for the corresponding period last year resulting from the same amount of road accidents.
