GTTA shortlists players for Caribbean Championships

THE Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) met recently and short-listed some of its brightest prospects to represent Guyana at the Caribbean Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championship scheduled for April 12-19 in St Kitts.

While Guyana hosted this championship in 2008 and won six gold, four silver and five bronze medals and are the defending champions, sponsorship will determine whether Guyana field a full-strength contingent. However, in a press release from the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) it stated that the players have been training under a rigid and structured training programme.

Further, it stated that this aims to allow the players to perform at the highest level at the championships as expectations are high for a large medal haul.

This Championship is a key event in the GTTA calendar of events especially since it forms the basis for regional table tennis supremacy and also gives the GTTA the opportunity to lobby for assistance from the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). In addition, it provides the opportunity for players to match skills with the region’s best players.

The players are Cadet 15 years and under: Boys – Stephan Patoir, Samuel Fraser, Dellon Mahadeo, Denzel Duff and Berachah Garrett while on the distaff side are Adeille Rosheuvel, Chelsea Edghill, Akiecia Nedd and Priscilla Greaves. In the 18 years and under Boys’ category are Nigel Bryan, Denzel Hopkinson, Ronaldo Bharat, Brandon Baldie and Trean Phillips while the Girls are Trenace Lowe, Varsha Panday and Ambrose Thomas.

Meanwhile, table tennis players will be engaged in a Masters Table Tennis Tournament scheduled for April 5 starting from 12:00 h .at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The categories to be contested are 40 years and over, 45 years and over, 50 years and over and 55 years and over.

Michael Vieira, Roy Pharmacy, Courtney Hinds and Builders Lumber Yard will be donating the trophies. There will be an entrance charge to participate in the tournament and interested players could register their names at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall after 16:00 h before April 4.
