THE Guyana cricket team departed the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Timehri yesterday for Grenada to begin the quest for their elusive four-day title since 2002.
The Guyanese will take on Windward Islands on Friday in the opening round of the 2009 WICB four-day regional tournament.
The team, after a briefing session at the Glow International Hotel with president of the Guyana Cricket Board, Chetram Singh, left with manager Carl Moore and coach Albert Smith for the Spice Island.
The team wrapped up its practice sessions on Monday after being encamped since December 12 last.
Prior to the team’s first encounter against the Windwards the players will be looking forward to two days of practice in Grenada. Coach Smith, on Monday at the Guyana National Stadium, said the necessary arrangements were already made for the team.
This was necessary because the lead up to the team’s departure was plagued with inclement weather and therefore the players were not able to have much practice on the turf. However, according to Smith the technical team focused a lot on the mental aspect of the game during the encampment.
The Guyana team left motivated and all the players are eager to do well and finally bring home the trophy that has been eluding them for the past seven years.
