Accused was returning horse, not stealing it

A RUPUNUNI rancher who reportedly stole a stallion appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, charged with larceny.Martin Scipio of Mocu Mocu Village, Rupununi pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that, between November 1 and December 30, 2015, at St Ignatius Village, Central Rupununi, he stole one brown stallion valued at $120,000, property of Bernard Simon.

Attorney Jed Vasconcellos, who represented Scipio, requested bail, stating that on the day in question, his client was returning the horse to its owner, and was not attempting to steal it.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones did not object to bail, but stated that the defendant, in the company of others, did attempt to steal the horse.

Magistrate McLennan granted bail to the defendant in the sum of $25,000. The case was transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for February 29 recall.
