Serial thief jailed for minibus battery

ABRAHIM Abdul, who on Wednesday admitted to stealing at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara a minibus battery worth $55,000, was yesterday sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by Providence Magistrate Leron Daly when he appeared before her to face a charge of simple larceny. The charge stated that, on February 2, at Little Diamond, EBD, he stole a battery that belonged to virtual complainant Shazan Deen. The 49-year-old defendant pleaded guilty as charged.

According to the facts, on the day in question, Deen made checks on his minibus, BKK 7855, and found the battery missing, the vehicle’s trunk open, and its door damaged. Deen subsequently reported the matter to the police, and identified Abdul as a suspect. Taken into police custody, Abdul admitted to stealing the battery.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Michael Grant told the court that the facts were as specified in the charge, and that the battery had been recovered. He also related that the defendant had been implicated in four similar matters, and had been convicted as well.

The magistrate has also ordered that the battery be returned to its owner.
