FOUR children ages one, two, five and eight, along with their mother Sunita Charran, 30, are hospitalised after they were stung by African bees on Sunday at their Number 67 Village home.

According to reports, the incident occurred at 07:00hrs as the family was at their house. The bees were in a nearby plot with overgrown vegetation.

The family was rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where they were treated and sent away. However, as the children began to develop symptoms, they were taken back to the hospital around 18:00hrs the said day where they were admitted.

Up to press time they remained hospitalised.

Speaking with the media, a brave Samaritan, Wadesh Kumar Persaud, 43, a sluice operator, who risked his life to save the children, recalled that after noticing what happened he and another neighbour went into the house and grabbed the youngest child first, followed by the others and the mother.

“We rush out and come and when abee see them pickney this everybody start cry because of their condition. When we carry them hospital them say over thousands bee bite them pickney this so much sting! When you have a polka dot clothes that’s how close them get bite,” Persaud said.

He called on persons to stop dumping their derelict vehicles and to clear their lands of overgrown bushes.

“This is very unfortunate, we are poor people at the back here and them rich people bring their old iron and park it here and when you tell them wha go on they want to fight, when you tell them about the bush them leave it till it get bee nest till it nearly kill them children,” he said.

Persaud added that when the children began vomiting, the young child even vomited a bee.

At one point, he noted one of the children appeared to have passed out on the verandah as he was covered by the bees.

Meanwhile, the 52-74 Neighbourhood Democratic Council, along with other stakeholders, have managed to have the bees removed from the area. A horse that was in the street was also stung.

Divisional Commander Boodnarine Persaud and team also visited the victims at the hospital on Monday afternoon as well as on Sunday. On Monday, he handed over hampers to the family.
