May 2020 was largely anticipated by many Guyanese. It was expected that this year’s Carnival would’ve been the biggest one the country has seen since it has officially started celebrating the festival about two years ago.

Organiser of Guyana Carnival Kerwin Bollers said that although the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented the celebration of the usually planned week of activities that has not stopped the committee from hosting several online events.

He stated that the committee saw that people needed entertainment and took the decision to host these virtual events. Bollers said that although persons are unable to be outside and physically at parties and events due to the pandemic, they could still enjoy themselves in the comfort of their own home.

“We’re making sure we have some of the best local artistes and DJs providing the music so people can have fun,” Bollers said earlier this week.

The Guyana Carnival Committee hosted several of these events leading up to the major virtial ‘Carnival Parade’ that occurred on May 26, the usual Carnival parade day. The events that the committee hosted were Soca and wine, Bright Colors Pool Party, Touch Down and Stinging Nettles, which were themed parties. Bollers said that the online attendees participated with many of them getting so into the events that they came all out in costumes and makeup and even had drinks to add that final touch.

“We had the virtual soca and wine, and we saw people dressed for the occasion although they were at home. Some of the ladies brought out their maxi dresses and their prints and so on, some guys got their flower shirts. I noticed a lot of persons even bought wine,” he said.

Bollers told The Buzz that the parade day celebrations took the form of several sections. He said that the parade began with makeup tutorials so that persons watching would be able to follow along and prepare their make-up looks for the day’s activities. He said that in addition to that, the day was filled with live performances from some of Guyana’s top musical Artistes including Timeka Marshall, Big Red, Jomo Primo, Steven Ramphal, Lil Calwain, Vanilla, and Kady Kish. In addition to the musical performances, the top Carnival DJs were spinning tracks to keep everyone energised and entertained just as if they were out on the road for Carnival 2020.

Persons got their virtual passes, got dressed and headed over to the Virtual Parade day live showcasing their colourful makeup looks as well as their costumes, dancing, singing, and enjoying tutorials from expert mixologists who got them all set with cocktail tutorials to keep them Buzzed. The live videos were hosted on the Guyana Carnival Facebook page, the Boom FM Facebook page, and other Guyana Carnival social media platforms.

Bollers said that in addition to the entertainment lineup of local artistes for this year, the committee had arranged for a guest performance by an international artiste. He said that the committee had to make the necessary adjustments to ensure that its supporters still had the best possible Carnival week. Bollers also noted that the next year’s Carnival is going to be bigger, stating that there are some surprises that the committee has not yet released.
