MINISTER of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton, on Thursday last, gifted a brand new guitar with the accompanying protective case and cleaning materials to the village of Paruima in the Upper Mazaruni, Region Seven.
Minister Norton, who also holds the Responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport, presented the instrument to Mr. Ishmael Abrams, a Regional Councillor attached to the Regional Democratic Council of Region Seven. The official handing over was done during a brief engagement at Minister Norton’s Main Street office. The request for the guitar was made via the Department of Youth.
“We wrote to the Youth Department asking if it could assist with providing the guitar for our youth music group, and Minister Norton promised that he would get it for us. Today, I am very happy that we are finally receiving it,” Mr. Abrams said.
He explained that the instrument will go a far way in promoting music as an extracurricular activity among the community’s youths, while strengthening the capacity of the existing music groups in the village.
“As simple as it may seem, this is genuinely a tremendous gift to the community and we are very grateful that the minister was able to deliver on his promise and fulfil our request. We are thankful,” Abrams said. Minister Norton encouraged that the item be used to enhance the community’s participation at national forums.
