Talks commence on ‘teachers’ terms and conditions’

THE Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) have commenced the negotiation process for the union’s proposal on terms and conditions for teachers for the period 2019 to 2023.

According to a press release from the ministry, the process began on March 13 and the initial meeting was chaired by Permanent Secretary (ag), Adele Clarke.
“[The meeting] is considered an introductory meeting where discussions were held on how the process will move forward,” the release noted. Both parties were required to submit additional information within specified timelines which will aid the negotiation process.

The government’s representatives at the meeting were Adele Clarke; Chief Education Officer, Marcel Hutson; Human Resource Manager, Jacqueline Simon; Ministerial Planner, Ministry of the Presidency, Jason Fraser; Senior Personnel Officer, Department of the Public Service, Gail Williams; Director of Budget, Ministry of Finance, Sonya Roopnauth and Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communities, Jaigobin Jaisingh.

GTU President, Mark Lyte; GTU General Secretary, Coretta Mc Donald; Treasurer, Sumanta Alleyne; First Vice-President, Lesmeine Collins; Second Vice-President, Julian Cambridge; Regional Vice-President, Berbice, Donnette D’Andrade; Regional Vice-President, Essequibo, Carmel Williams; Regional Vice-President, Demerara, Collis Nicholson and Field/Administrative Secretary, Lancelot Baptiste, were the union’s representatives.
The next meeting is scheduled for April 15, 2019.
