Digicel partners Evolution Cycle Club for 5th Cancer Awareness race

CANCER Awareness Month has again benefitted from a major boost with mobile service provider Digicel partnering Evolution Cycle Club for the 5th Edition of their Cancer Awareness race, set for October 30.
Featuring seven categories of racers including juniors, seniors, novices, Mountain bikers, ladies and Veterans over-45 and under-45, the event will see the top wheelsmen in action.
According to Marketing Manager,Jacqueline James,the company has moved from making the event limited only to breast cancer awareness to include awareness of all types of cancer, adding that they are dedicating this ride to one specific employee.
“One such person is our very own, to which I want to dedicate the entire activity which is the Digicel cancer awareness cycle race;and this is to Sharon Khan. She has been an inspiration to all of us here at Digicel and this is one way of us(rewarding)her for her dedication and passion.”
“Digicel will match the total figure that we get at the end of the day once persons register and this money will be donated to the Guyana Cancer society on behalf of all the cyclists and the staff of Digicel,” she added.
The first race of the day at 8:00am will see the ladies, novices and mountain bikers in a four lap affair around the National Park, commencing from Irving Street, proceeding to JB Singh Highway then to Carifesta Ave, Camp streets, Thomaslands and back to the start/finish line.
The main event will see the seniors; juniors and veterans (both over-45 and under-45) take the stage. The seniors and juniors will have 30 laps to duke it out while the veterans will have to round the national park 18 times.
“We expect anywhere in excess of 70 cyclists because it is a race that people look forward too, ” President of Evolution Cycle Club,Keith Fernandes,said while encouraging fair competition among the riders.
Last year’s champion,Raynauth Jeffrey,will have his hands full but is confident of a repeat, saying, “I’m ready for a next victory.”
The winner of the feature event will cart of $250,000 dollars while second place will take home $200,000, third place $150,000, fourth place $80,000 and fifth place $20,000.
