Over $4M up for grabs — at inaugural Aruwai Summer Regatta

POWER-boat racing fans, dirtbike fanatics and fun-loving people in general are in for a treat this weekend, when the Aruwai White H2O Resort hosts its first ever Summer Regatta. The two-day event, which begins tomorrow, is said to be the highlight of activities in the Batrica area, as the summer holiday comes to an end and promises to leave a lasting impression.

The first day’s schedule of events will see bikers putting their skills and experience to the test on the newly-constructed Aruwai race track.

Engines will sound off to kick-start the first day’s event at 09:00 hours with the 125-450cc motorcycle race, followed by the 400-600cc Quads, then the 85-250cc Novice races.

Other anticipated races will include 450-680cc Utility ATV category; the 100-250 Road Bikes, and, of course, for the kiddies, the children cycling.

Day one of the fun in the sun will culminate with a bar-b-que and lime at the breathtaking White Water Falls.

Now ,it’s no secret that power-boat racing is synonymous with Bartica, as that community has produced some of the best in power-boat racing.
Day two will give some of the best in the business an opportunity to put their skills to the test, as they are expected to thrill the crowd in a number of events as they each battle for supremacy.

Some of the popular names to be featured in the power-boat racing include Neil and Clint Gonsalves of the Pomeroon, and Dave Scott, Dave Young, Clarence Bell, Jose Jardine and Selywn Joseph.

Scott and Bell are expected to go head-to-head in the 200HP power-boat race, while Clint Gonsalves will take on Selwyn Joseph for the title in the 40HP race.

Other spectacular events will include the open, the 90HP, the 75HP and the Jet Ski races. For the power-boat races, a total of $3.7M in cash prizes is up for grabs.

Meanwhile, with the opening of the Aruwai Race Track, there are plans to make the Dirt Bike Racing an annual feature, and an addition to sporting activities in the Bartica area.

Given that the Aruwai Resort was birthed out of a vision from a son of that community, Chunilall Babolall, the aim of this project is to give back to the community, while at the same time providing an alternative recreational activity for youths in that community. However, it must be noted that given the large biking population in Guyana, the facility, though located in Region 7, will serve as a catalyst to spur the interest for bigger competitions and race meets for the biking fraternity.
