FOLLOWING Wednesday night’s break-in and robbery at a stall at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, Town Clerk Carol Sooba opined that it was an ‘inside job’.
Noting that security personnel placed at the market had reported neither seeing nor hearing anything suspicious that night, she declared that City Hall, by means of the City Constabulary, had launched an independent investigation into the incident.
She pointed out that the very stall had been similarly robbed three months ago, and all indications seem to suggest that the robbery is something ‘internal’. However, authorities have some information they are working on, but they will also work collaboratively with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to crack the case.
The Town Clerk said City Hall provides the market with security through the City Constabulary, and on the night in question, personnel were tasked with securing the market as per normal, and there was no breach at either the entrances or exits of the market.
She opined that person(s) may have concealed themselves in the building…but they have a theory and she is awaiting a full report from the City Constabulary Department.
Sooba said it was reported that some sections of the Stabroek Market were without power and authorities have since acquired the services of a specialist to confirm whether it was a technical failure or a deliberate tampering, since there had been no power outage in the area that night.
She explained that the culprits spent a lot of time torching their way into the stall, and that alone is suspicious, since security had reported nothing amiss.
Contacted yesterday, ‘A’ Division Commander George Vyphius said that the burglary is under active police investigation, since a report was filed.
Last Wednesday night, Sanjay’s Jewellery, located at Stall 38, Section Three Stabroek Market, was burgled of more than $5M in cash and jewels.
The stall owner, Sanjay Jones, reported that the thieves used a blow torch to gain access to the stall, which was highly secured by grill work, and the robbers broke into one of two vaults and took away gold and diamond jewellery and the cash he had stored there.
The business premises have security cameras, which were expertly disconnected. Consequently, there is no image of the actual break-in and robbery of the stall.
On December 3, robbers also blow-torched their way into Trini’s Variety Store in Bourda Market, and carted off $1.5M and several uninstalled security cameras.
