Arimu shopkeeper refused bail on gun, ammo charges

SATROHAN Jaimangal (no address given) was refused bail yesterday, when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive- Hamilton on charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, which stated that, on June 8, at Arimu, Cuyuni River, he had a .38 special revolver and two matching rounds, without being the holder of licences.
Attorney-at-law Mr. George Thomas, for the defendant, claimed the gun and bullets were not found on Jaimangal and requested bail for him.
Defence Counsel said the defendant operates a shop in the interior and it was open for business on the day when the find was made in the area to which the public had access.
However, Police Corporal Simone Payne, prosecuting, objected to the grant of pre-trial freedom for Jaimangal and informed the court that the gun and ammunition were in the defendant’s bedroom in a pair of long boots.
The prosecutor said the defendant also admitted, to the police, that he bought the firearm from a man in the area.
The case will be called, again, at Bartica Court, to which it has been transferred on June 21.
