Two remanded on drug trafficking charges

TWO men living in the same building, at Lot 156 Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, were both remanded to prison yesterday on drug trafficking charges.
Brian Matthews, 29 and Owen Atkins, 32,  pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.
Matthews faced two charges which said, on June 7, he trafficked 278 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) and six grammes of cocaine.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Trenton Lake, who represented both of the defendants, said Matthews was not at home when police searched his apartment.
However, Police Corporal Simone Payne, prosecuting, maintained he was present and admitted ownership of the drugs.
Speaking for Atkins, the lawyer pointed out that other persons live in the building and the marijuana for which the latter is charged was outside his apartment.
But the prosecutor insisted that the find was in the defendant’s living room and he said it belonged to him.
The defendants will make their next court appearance tomorrow.
