Freed of murder

– but must find $175, 000 bail for manslaughter charge
MURDER accused Dilip Lambert, who was freed of murder last Thursday, was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $175, 000 with a similar surety.
Justice Roxanne George, who granted bail on the strength of an application by defence counsel Peter Hugh, told the accused, “You cannot be tried any longer for the murder of your wife. You have already been freed of that murder”.

The jury had disagreed on a verdict on the lesser count of manslaughter in the proportion of nine to three. The accepted majority verdict is eleven to one, or ten to two.  The judge decided on the quantum of bail after prosecutor Rhondel Weever declared that the prosecution was not opposing the granting of bail and would abide by the discretion of the court.
At this stage, Hugh pointed out that his client was penniless and would have to make a further application for a reduction.
The accused has been remanded to prison to await his trial for the count of manslaughter.
