GHB/Farfan and Mendes Tournament

GCC draw first blood with 2-1 win against Old Fort
THE Georgetown Cricket Club’s Hockey Section drew first blood with a 2-1 win against Old Fort when the Guyana Hockey Board’s Farfan and Mendes 2009 1st Division Hockey Tournament flicked off yesterday at the GCC ground, Bourda.

In the tournament’s opening match, GCC edged joint defending champions Old Fort by a 2-1 margin with goals coming off the stick of Kevin Spencer in the 38th and 55th minutes, while Old Fort’s lone goal was scored by Aderemi Simon in the 45th minute.

Both teams enjoyed equal ball possession during the first session, but Spencer received a pass while in Old Fort’s `D’ and converted, shaking the back of the opposition’s net to see his team to a 1-0 lead at the interval.

Ten minutes into the second session, Simon found the equaliser via a penalty corner that was taken by former national midfielder Dexter Wyles who pushed the ball to Simon who caught GCC custodian Michael Xavier advancing along with former national defender Dameon Woodruffe and clinically placed the ball past both of them. Ten minutes later, Spencer gave his team a 2-1 lead from a penalty corner and the score line remained unchanged at the end of regulation time.
The competition will continue on Monday at the same venue with GCC tackling joint defending champions Hikers from 16:45 h and on Friday, Hikers will face Old Fort from 16:45 h.
