This announcement was made by Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran during the handing over of approximately 1,000 books by a team of United Kingdom (UK)-based Guyanese for use in the health sector.

In light of the investment into training and the need for additional acquisition of educational resources, the minister said the handover of the resource materials was timely.

“The training division is being boosted and with such an expansion of services the books are a welcome resource,” Dr. Ramsaran posited.

The UK team comprised Mr. Roland Rampat, Director of Europa Worldwide Logistics and coordinators Mr. Faiyaz Alli, with the Guyana-Overseas/UK Cricket team and Ms. Patsy Downey with the People’s Progressive Party UK Chair.

Mr. Ronald Rampat in an invited comment stated that his company is a major distributing entity in the UK and handles the distribution of a number of books for well known publishers.

He added that the books that were returned to his company were stored and then, following their release by the publishing houses, were shipped to Guyana.

The books, all latest editions, were in good condition and while the majority were medical books while, the others covered issues of culture, art, literature, history, economics and law, among others.

Dr. Narine Singh from the Ministry of Health, described the 13th edition of the Mayes’ Midwifery – a textbook for midwives, one of the books donated, as “the bible for the midwifery programme.”

According to Dr. Ramsaran the medical books will be used to boost training while the others will be distributed to relevant agencies in need and others given as gifts to the graduates of some of the ongoing medical training programmes. “By giving them as gifts we would be giving them more than trinkets but something that would add value to their lives and help them become more rounded,” the minister said.

In response to the minister’s plea for continued collaborations with the UK team, Mr. Faiyaz Alli posited that the book donation is likely to become an annual feature on the calendar as the team hopes, too, to build a long term relationship.

Ms. Patsy Downey echoed her colleague’s statements and said that with local support the team hopes to do much more.
