New Year’s day fire leaves nine homeless

A family of nine was displaced when fire believed to be electrical in nature razed a wooden house at Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, on New Year’s Day.

The occupants, including several children, were at home when the conflagration broke out, which quickly destroyed the dwelling house.

An occupant first heard crackling sounds and observed the electrical wire leading from her house to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) utility pole sparking.

Within a few minutes fire engulfed the entire building causing the family to run to safety, leaving all their possessions behind.

Their loss amounted to millions since the house was recently renovated and the family had purchased new furniture among other articles and appliances.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded in time to douse the flames and said they are investigating the fire.

Meanwhile, the occupants are contemplating their next move and are staying with relatives and friends.
