THE annual Mayor’s Cup Knock-Out Football tournament will kick-off from 18:00h this evening with a double-header at the GFC ground. Both matches will see teams from Georgetown taking on their Linden counterparts. The feature match brings together GDF and Milerock from 20:00h., while the opening encounter will see Bakewell Topp XX of Linden facing GFC of Georgetown. The tournament which is being organised by former national player and coach Lennox Arthur will have over $850,000 in prize money along with trophies up for grabs and will be held under the auspices of Georgetown’s Mayor Hamilton Green. The winning team in this year’s tournament will receive $500,000 and the Keith Niles trophy, while the second to fourth place teams will receive $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively along with trophies. Prizes will also be awarded to the Most Valuable Player, the Best Goal Keeper and the Highest Goal Scorer. To date Arthur has received pledges of financial support from Courtney Benn Contracting and Construction Company, MACORP, General Equipment Guyana Limited, Bakewell, Banks DIH Limited and Demerara Distillers Limited. He is however urging other corporate entities to come on board. The other first round matches are as follows; Fruta Conquerors will meet Golden Grove, Pele takes on Victoria Kings, Buxton United comes up against Uprising, Alpha United faces BV/Triumph, BK International Western Tigers tackles Uitvlugt and Sunburst Camptown is down to oppose Pouderoyen. For the quarter-finals, the winner of the Pele/Victoria Kings match will face the winner of the Buxton United/BV/Triumph fixture; the winner of the Tigers/Uitvlugt encounter meets the winner of the Camptown/Pouderoyen affair; the winner of the GDF/Milerock match faces the winner of the Conquerors/Golden Grove match; and the winner of the Topp XX/GFC affair, meets the winner of the Alpha/BV/Triumph fixture. The Mayor’s Cup was inaugurated in 1985 with then Prime Minister Hamilton Green as the patron and was then known as the Prime Minister’s Cup. However, when Green became the Mayor of Georgetown, the name of the tournament changed accordingly (Michael DaSilva).
