The man who allegedly shot dead his ex-girlfriend on Old Year’s night in the city was arrested early yesterday morning at the Springlands back track, Corentyne River, before he could have fled to Suriname.

On Old Year’s Night while all Guyana was in festive mood to welcome the New Year, 20-year-old Carlissa Matthews of North Ruimveldt, Georgetown was reportedly shot in the head by her former partner whose name was given as Jermaine Maynard of Cross Street, Georgetown. The incident occurred near KFC on Water Street, Stabroek, at about 11:45 pm Tuesday.
According to reports the shooting stemmed from a misunderstanding between the couple earlier on and Maynard shot the woman while she was standing on Water Street, Georgetown. The suspect then fled the scene.
Ending the affair
Sources said that Maynard had threatened to kill the woman because she told him that she was ending their relationship. One relative said that that the woman was standing with her mother when Maynard hailed out to her.
The source said that as she approached him he lit two squibs before shooting her. It is understood that the couple had a history of misunderstandings and the woman had wounded Maynard on one occasion.
Reports from Deputy Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud indicated that the man was arrested yesterday morning at the Springlands back track, Corentyne River as he was preparing to flee to Suriname.
